Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze Review-JPS

Added: 21.02.2014 0:15 | 26 views | 0 comments

"Growing up in the 90s, Donkey Kong Country from Rareware was revolutionary for its time with pre-rendered 3D graphics on the Super Nintendo. In comparison to other platformers like Super Mario World, it was absolutely incredible.. After three very successful entries in the 16-bit era, as well as some Game Boy entries, the series moved to the Nintendo 64 with Donkey Kong 64, though it was very different from the past games. When Microsoft bought Rare, many were worried that we may never see a return to this classic series, but luckily that was not the case as Retro Studios released the very well received Donkey Kong Country Returns for the Nintendo Wii back in 2010. Last year, many were surprised to learn that Retro Studios was bringing Donkey Kong Country to the HD age with a sequel known as Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze." -JPS

Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze is the next entry in the reinspired DKC series. Will it be a return to solid form or will it shift Wii U consoles?

'Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze' familiar but fun | The denver post

Donkey Kong Country Returns for the Wii brought back great memories of playing this classic series on the Super Nintendo. Tropical Freeze for the Wii U expands upon the fun of the 2010 game. A new group of baddies, the Snowmads, have taken over the island and ruining Donkey Kong's birthday in the process. But our heroes aren't having any of that, and it's up to them to take back their home. The plot is similar to the Tiki takeover in Returns.

Feature: Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze – a sign of things to come?

Tropical Freeze is a wonderfully crafted platformer and another enjoyable Wii U title. But why does it, essentially, ask you to turn the Gamepad's screen off?

The Wii U's damning sales figures make it an easy write off, but the issue is more complicated than that. I'm still pretty sure Nintendo doesn't know what it has. Hell, I don't even know what a Wii U is any more. If Donkey Kong is anything to go by, this machine, once sold (or at least, attempted to be sold) as the next innovative step, the bridge between the Wii and the iPad, is now little more than an HD GameCube that you can play remotely. And that might be the best thing for it.

During my time with Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze, I found myself asking 'who is this for?'...

Review: Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze (Wii U)

Frozen out?

It is defiantly old-fashioned, levels-and-lives platforming, but goodness is it lovely. In vibrant 720p and faultless 60FPS, Donkey and friends charge from left to right across six worlds, each offering an amazing variety of ideas, visual fireworks and a considerable challenge.

If Satan himself made video game bosses, they’d be in Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze. These astonishing difficulty spikes push you to the absolute limits of your platforming skill and laugh in your face as you fail repeatedly. They’re the stuff of nightmares; gorgeous, chunky baddies that lull you...

Fans of previous Donkey Kong Country games shouldn't miss Tropical Freeze for anything. Though it fails to innovate in an engaging way, the base on which Tropical Freeze is built is solid as a glacier.

We Got This Covered wrote: The forest is once again alive, thanks to Retro Studios release of Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, the follow-up to its well-received and incredibly difficult series reboot, Donkey Kong Country Returns. This time around, however, there are no voodoo masks. On top of that, a few familiar Kong family members have chosen to venture out of the woodwork to join their pals Donkey and Diddy on their latest adventure. Still, the core remains the same, and the difficulty hasnt changed much.

GamesBeat: Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze isnt the game the Wii U needs right now (review)

GamesBeat's Mike Minotti: Im happy that Donkey Kong Country returned, but I think the series can go away for a while again. As entertaining as Tropical Freeze is, it doesnt offer anything substantially different or creative to warrant another follow-up.

GA - "Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze is a fantastic return to the world originally created by Rare on the Super Nintendo, which was then brought back to life by the development team at Retro Studios on the Wii in 2010. Like most, I was a bit disappointed to learn that the first Wii U title by Retro would be a sequel to Donkey Kong Country Returns, but that disappointment was quickly replaced by eager anticipation fueled by the fact that Donkey Kong Country Returns was one of my favorite titles for the Wii."
